Thread: Bioshock Infinite

  1. Bioshock 1 and 2 are keeping me from being interested in this, despite looking SO GOOD. Does this do anything meaningful differently?

So all the cool stuff happens elsewhere.

Levine had this awesome game made and decided we are not worthy of said dimension.

Better combat, bigger story focus. I'd still rather have someone build on System Shock 2 instead of making another setpiece action game though.

  7. Sounds like it's not for me. Thanks!

  8. "Better combat" is highly debatable.

Also, I agree with this video on pretty much every point.

I'm not so sure that's a great idea, though. System Shock 2 had a lot of brilliant ideas but a lot of the PSI powers were pure crap. PSI was the most interesting part of the game, but the reality is that a lot of the abilities and powers (both PSI and non) weren't that great. What Bioshock tried to do was simplify the use of powers while keeping the element of choice.

The original Bioshock succeeded at the former while failing massively at the latter. Bioshock Infinite does a much better job at the latter, at least in 1999 Mode, but I don't think reverting wholly to the pseudo-RPG structure of System Shock 2 would be a good idea.

System Shock 2 fans should buy Infinite and play it on 1999 Mode.

  10. The biggest issue I had with Bioshock (and it sounds like it's to much a larger degree in Infinite) is that the story would've been greatly enhanced by being included in the gameplay instead of being effectively two unrelated things. System Shock took place on a derelict ship so limited personal interaction worked fine. Bioshock kind of tried for the same thing but then had major plot points regarding player actions which fell laughably flat because of it being nothing more than a shooter. Infinite, from what I've read and the spoiler-free mentions by my roommate, sounds like it would be twice as good if they jettisoned all the shooter elements and made it closer to a puzzle game with conversation input and choices by the player. Of course then it wouldn't be as publicly well received.

Or maybe I'll feel differently after actually playing it.
