I finally got this today. It's definitely Bangai-O and if you like Bangai-O you will probably like it.
But it is way more hardcore than the earlier games. The original game really didn't get challenging until the last few levels, where this one is out to motherfuck you at every turn. Which is kind of great, but probably not for everyone. Pacing-wise, it skews more toward DC Bangai-O, too, for what that's worth. It's really white-knuckle intense, all of the fruit collecting, milking, methodical stuff is pretty much gone.
I've just scratched the surface, but so far I'm very happy with it. We'll see how I feel 20 levels from now.

You liked the N64 one more than the DC one, so I'd say this one probably skews a bit in the opposite direction from that. Though the DC one was a bit more in the N64 direction and you didn't like that one, right? So I dunno.
Though, again, I think most people that dug Bangai-O and like hard/sometimes frustrating games with short levels would be into this.
I meant more in terms of pacing. The N64 one was slower and more methodical. The DC one was streamlined a bit so you didn't have to worry as much about collecting fruit and building up your meter. The DS one went back to methodical somewhat and then this one is over the top bullshit crazy.
If the controller was the selling point then nevermind, because the Xbox controller works really well.
