Thread: Shantae

  1. Shantae

Picked it up a few days ago and am very impressed. The animation and color is great and the design on everything has a great Japanese feel to it. The tinkerbats are some impressive little freaks and the gameplay is nothing to sneeze at. So who has it and what do you think?

Also, how did you feel about buying the game? I had the honor of dealing with two snickering Software Etc employees who really needed a good beating.... *-neo

  2. See that's the thing. I read the review over at IGN, and it sounds pretty cool, as Castlevania and Metroid games are some of my favorite kind. I'm just not sure I could get over the graphics and sillyness of it. Does the animation and level design make up for the limited graphics? I heard it has pretty slick animation. But with HoD coming soon, I'm not sure I'd bother; still, I'd like a new game for my GBA, so please post some impressions?

Also, how much did you pick it up for?

  3. Unfortunately, I'm not finding it to be as fun as I expected. It's great from a technical standpoint, but the gameplay doesn't do much for me so far.

  4. I know Capcom publishes Shantae, but who developed it?

The employees at KB Toys snickered at me when I asked if they had Misadventures of Tron Bonne...
    Name: Rock
    Town: Arcadia

  5. Shantae was developed by WayForward Technologies.

  6. I have it, and I love it. Everything you read in the reviews is true. It's a fantastic 8-bit game. If that "8-bit" part turns you off, then you shouldn't buy it.

Since everyone's been mentioning the new Shantae DLC game, I decided to give this one a try. Checked out eBay and saw it going for an average of $200?? Fuck that. Mentioned it to John and he had it, hooray!

Just started playing it today, and I kind of really don't like it. First stage was alright, maybe a little too long for the intro. Jumped over the same building like five times and killed the same enemy pattern every time. After that, nobody tells you where to go, enemies take like 200 hits to die, plus your hair attack sucks and doesn't register half the time. Flying enemies are especially annoying because of the shitty hair attack. There is no map, are you serious? I think I might be missing a map that came with the game, maybe? There is no way this is just how you're supposed to play. I can't run without first doing the hair attack and being stuck there forever, I dunno. If this is supposed to be a Metroid-style exploration game, it needs shorter "rooms' instead of these annoyingly huge, sprawling areas with a million enemies to slow you down and bottomless pits that take you back to the start. This game kind of sucks you guys!

Who liked this and why? No wonder all the other Shantae shit got cancelled. Smart moves.

  9. Most of what you said is the reason I wasn't able to finish Shantae when it first came out or when I tried to replay it in 2007; clunky controls, confusing areas, camera being zoomed in too much... It was very impressive when it first came out, just not enough to keep me playing.

I do think it would be incredible if Wayforward used the Risky's Revenge engine to remake the first Shantae, though. Risky's Revenge played fantastically.

Anyone who tells you the original Shantae is great is lying to you. It has some great animation and- that's it. It reeks of love and not really knowing how to make a fun videogame.
No, there's no map. It's easy to figure out where you have to go, the problem is those. fucking. enemies. and blind jumps.
    The dungeons were okay.

The DSi Shantae is pure class. Enemies take 2-4 hits, the whole thing is mapped, no jumping down holes because you can't see where you're going, and it's pretty funny!

Also, Metroid-style exploration? Fuck you. IT'S ALL MONSTER WORLD UP IN HE-YA.
