Thread: This Just In: Bobby Kotick Is a Moron

  1. This guy is toxic. I also think he gets a kick out of reading the forum fallout after he says ridiculous stuff.

  2. Bungie made Halo, and Halo sucks, so his point is moot.

Maybe paying for the privilege would cross the line, but when you have people swearing by MGS or Final Fantasy, you have to wonder how much gameplay matters to them.
See to me THIS is the bullshit ruining games. Yoshi you can spout all you want about casual this and that, but at least those fuckers are PLAYING a game. I'm so sick of this "experiencing", epic narrative, hollywoodesq bullshit. Games need to get back to being fucking games. I really do not get this shit about watching youtube videos of games you don't have time to play. I do not get the point in that at all. Games are meant to be played, not watched.
    Where I play

    True.

    In general, they can't.

I like "experience" games in addition to ones more gameplay-focused but I agree. It's frustrating how so many games with large budgets try so desperately to be movies. As I'm currently replaying the classic Ultima Underworld, I'm just reminded of this Spector quote from a few months ago -
One of the great challenges for videogames is that we have to stop building movie sets and start building worlds. Back in the old days, Origin’s motto was ‘We create worlds’. Somewhere along the line we lost that, and started building movie sets

Wait, what? Casuals and the "experiencing" to me overlap quite a bit. And both groups suck balls. To be perfectly clear, I am talking about games where the narrative dwarfs the gameplay. I think story is a good thing, but it has to be secondary, unless its a genre like adventure, where story has always been the focus.

edit: And per NZE's quote, Warren Spector rules, but you all already knew that... except probably Compass.

  7. Shareholders and return on investments make videogames shit
Bullshit. Developers ham-fisting and head-banging their 'visions' through videogames, consumer demand be damned, and continuing to do so until a publisher finally says "we're fucked, we've lost all this money on million dollar games that sell like shit, we need to do something" and coming up with possible solutions (some of them dumb) MAKE VIDEOGAMES SHIT.

Blame the disease, not the symptoms. The only reason publishers and dudes like Kotick do this shit is because their games don't sell. And why not? Because no one wants to own a $60 interactive movie. They buy it, beat it, get bored of it, and sell it. The hype train rides all the suckers in for the first few weeks, and said suckers take the next rail to Next Big Thing-ville. Stellar AAA there, right? Totally undeserving of being "milked" right?

    Give me a fucking break.

    Right.

What? The reason they do it is because too many non-gamers buy just enough to ruin our fucking hobby.

    Right.
I didn't say it was necessary in every game. Hell, the most expensive games I have bought in the last year (Cave's 360 shooters) have essentially no story, and what is there I can't understand anyway.
