Thread: 31 Days of Horror, Part 3: Three Times Three is Dead 3D

  1. For as much as I listen to the hiphop group (see avatar), I've never seen People Under the Stairs. Maybe I should fix that.

    I'm down to watch horror movies all month. Any good recommendations on Netflix Instant? I know Dead Snow is on there.

    EDIT: If anyone hasn't seen The Thing, do so right now. Probably my favorite horror movie, although I'd say it dabbles into the thriller genre a lot too. It's fucking fantastic and the effects hold up surprisingly well for a movie made in 1982.

  2. My impressions of the ones I've seen from arjue's list:

    Frailty - Awesome until its kind of ruined by its shitty frame narrative, It makes me think that every late 90s thriller had to have some sort of shitty trick ending.

    Cemetary Man - This is a weird, weird movie. I'm not really sure I can recommend it.

    Altered States - Haven't seen it yet, but I think this is more of a spooky sci-fi think piece than a horror movie

    Audition - Not what I expected at all, and was disappointed because of that. I may have liked it more with different expectations, but as it stands: eh.

    The Monster Squad - BOOBIES

    Piranha - Pretty awesome movie. Joe Dante being crazy

    Trick R Treat - A lot of fun, similar to Monster Squad in its tone except more violent. I'll probably rewatch this as a double feature for something

    I need a Roger Corman movie for this month, but I'm not too sure what. So far I am leaning to one of his Poe films, specifically Masque of the Red Death with Vincent Price. Ideas?

    A lot of the movies on my list are on Netflix Instant. You should watch House of the Devil, which is on there, it is awesome.

  4. Masque of Red Death, House of Usher or Pit and the Pendulum are all well worth watching.

    BUT my recommendation would actually be that you do a double feature one night of the original Corman Little Shop of Horrors followed by the 80s one.

  5. That's not a bad idea. I could get behind doubling up on the original and remake.

    I watched Usher and Pit in my english class in high school (weird teacher), so I guess I'm going to have to go with Masque.

  6. My list is a combination of highly recommended stuff, stuff I just haven't gotten around to watching yet and some really obscure shit that looks worth watching in some way. I think you might be right about altered states though.

    Angst was really good. Its about a serial killer who is released from prison only to continue to indulge in his temptation. Its from his perspective, with him narrating over the whole thing. It's a very realistic take on the subject, portraying him not as a calculated hulking menace, but as a weak and scared little man controlled by his fear, a product of the ordeal that was his childhood. Highly recommended if you can find it.

    Thats really neat! congrats!

    Cabin Fever has a pretty old school vibe to it. Its slower than a lot of people expect when they first see it so a lot of people didn't like it. I enjoyed it though.

  7. Let The Right One In (Your Butt) - I knew I would like this movie, it just took two years to get around to watching it. Oddly enough, the first movie I watched last year for this was Sleepaway Camp, a movie that also features an androgynous boy. Being stuck permanently at age 12 would be awful.

  8. I watched a french horror movie from 2004 called Calvaire or The Ordeal. It was really slow and not much happened, which is a shame because it was really competently made. Pacing wise, The first 3 quarters should be the first quarter and the last quarter should be the last 3 quarters.

  9. So Far:

    Frozen - What a suprise this was, very well shot, paced and acted (on what seems to be a small budget). Probably one of my favorite horrors out of the past few years, and has a good progression with tense moments. There are a few things I could get nitpicky about, but they are forgivable considering. You guys should check this out for this years challengs. It's directed by Adam Green who also did Hatchet. Plus it's cheap at walmart and bestbuy this week. Actually watched this twice if that counts

    Survival of the Dead - Much better than the abomination that was Diary of the Dead, and even Day of the Dead Contagium, but not anywhere close to touching Romero in his heyday. They tried to fuse comedic moments in with the mayhem, and some of them seem to work, but a lot seem like they were trying too hard. Plus the CGI is pretty spotty. Overall at least worth a watch if you like zombies

    Tarantula- awesome 50s B-Horror giant monster movie about a genetic experiment gone wrong. I love these old films because instead of relying on computers, the effects had to be created by hand or by ingenuity. The ending is too quick and happy, but this was the 50s.

    The Mole People - another 50s horror/sci fi. This was really lacking, and the story turned out to be something like a Star Trek episode. The way the mole people came out of the ground was pretty creepy. Started off well, and then went downhill when it leaned more into sci-fi territory

    The Incredible Shrinking Man- yet another 50s sci-fi/horror. (Im counting these 50s flicks for the challenge because they really have elements from both genres, even though they are labeled Sci-Fi ) This was originally penned by Richard Matheson, who was usually on point with his isolative stories. The first half of the film deals with disbelief of change, while the second half is much more dark and somber dealing with acceptance. The second half dialogue is narrated and helps to create a desolate atmosphere. It's kind of a "reverse" version of Tarantula. Always loved this one as a kid and still do. As from above, since this was pre CGI, there are some shots where you are trying to figure out how they did that, or there are little nuances that make the story that much more realistic. ie. The black journal that is thrown across the room and picked up by his wife.
