What Are You Playing? (Fall 2010)

I played some 3D Dot Game Heroes, just the first dungeon so far. I like it although it's too early to tell how it compares with the Zelda series. Hopefully, once the appeal of the trippy art style fades, there's still some quality overworld and dungeon design.

I have mostly been playing Valkyria Chronicles. I'm on chapter 8 and loving it. I'm rarely into SRPGs but this might be my favourite one ever. You get the best of both worlds here: amazing visual presentation putting you right in the action and constant decision making. There's not a lot of boring micromanagement shit bogging it down. Being able to have several mid-battle saves makes a difference, too.

I also picked up Red Steel 2 because it was cheap and I wanted the included Motion Plus attachment. I played it briefly and the melee combat is smoother than the first. This has potential.

Sounds good to me. I might just check out SMG2 if it skips the boring stuff.

It skips the unnecessary hub roaming but it has the same difficulty balance issue as the first, i.e. it doesn't get challenging until you beat more than just the levels necessary to get the ending.

[A Robot Bit Me]

I started 3D Dot today as well, using the Santa warrior of course! Cleared the first two dungeons and was rolling through the third until I got stuck looking for a key. It gets a little too literal in celebrating the original Zelda at times -- the dungeons are aesthetically samey, for example -- but other than that, it's fantastic. I haven't been this sucked into a From release since Otogi 2.

Neo, go into the options menu and turn loading screens on if you haven't. There are some pretty incredible tributes to classic cover art using the game's characters and engine.

Been playing Mark of the Wolves off and on since the last Dreamcast meet up. Still a fantastic game. It's just a shame my reflexes aren't what they were 10 years ago. :/

With a 10-week-old baby at home, what little time I had available to game is nearly non-existent. I will say that at least my pile of shame has reached the point where I don't have to buy new releases anytime soon, since it takes me forever to finish anything I'm playing.

With that, I'm about 1/4 of the way through Castlevania. Aside from all of the invisible walls and a few camera hiccups, I've been really surprised at how much fun I've been having with it.

Also started Red Dead. The sheer scope of the thing is a little daunting, especially considering the additional 6 hours or so Undead Nightmare will add. I can see myself playing this well into the new year.
