  2. It always pays to keep your expectations in check.

    I loved the first but I also know that it was because it was a little closer to generic space action movie as opposed to specifically a Trek movie (which are pretty hit-or-miss in the first place), so I was looking for more of the same from this anyway.

  3. It's funny; the only Star Trek movies that really try to be Star Trek movies are the ones everybody cites as terrible. Not that they aren't mind you - 1, 3 and 5 all fail pretty spectacularly at being thoughtful yet engaging "real" sci-fi, while the even-numbered ones, the Next Gen films, and JJTrek all just try (with varying levels of success) to be fun popcorn movies that happen to have spaceships and lasers.

    EDIT: now that I think about it a little more, Generations also belongs in the first category.

    There's a place for both types of Trek, but being fun sci fi works better for the movies I think.

    I mean, First Contact didn't have much of a message. The Borg nearly destroyed the entire fleet, then went back in time, then Worf killed borg in a space suit, and Picard killed Borg with a tommy gun. That was pretty awesome.

    The cerebral stuff is best left for the TV series, and we already have hundreds of episodes of that.

  6. JJ is a hack. The finale of this movie is nothing but a ripoff of the original in reverse. Oooh alternate universe so Spock lives and Kirk dies. Oooh Spock loses his shit and yells Khan. Kirks death is meaningless as soon as you hear about the magic Khan blood. Pikes probably is too, since they've left themselves an out for that too. The movie was fine until Spock transports the torpedoes over to Vengence, which is a perfectly good finale to the movie. I cannot believe how angry the last part of this movie made me. Perhaps I am too big a fan of the original Wrath of Khan but whomever greenlit the ending of this movie can die in fire.

  7. It really is the last 45 min or so that just drives you into a rage and makes you really dislike the movie, it's true. Up till that point it was an ok little popcorn flick.

  8. I watched this last night with my dad.

    I enjoyed the fuck out of it, just as much as the first JJ Abrams Star Trek movie.

    The last third of the movie was by far the weakest part. But if it seriously made you "fly into a rage" and made you dislike everything that came before it, you got problems. This was a pretty entertaining movie overall.

    It could have been way way better had they settled on one clear villain. I also wish that they had done more with the first half hour of the movie.

    Generally, I think they need to pay fewer homages to the original series. By the end of the movie things were getting a little silly.

    Finally, I think knowing the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch's character spoils nothing. His identity is so clearly telegraphed that it should be immediately apparent to anyone who has even a passing familiarity with the franchise.
