Thread: Just bought Gran Turismo 3.

  1. I wanted to like GT3, but as far as I'm concerned, any racing game trying for realism needs analog throttle, I think.

The focus on modifying your car deemphasizes the racing aspect of the game - you can beat races by learning how to win, or by racing against underpowered cars for money long enough to get to the point where your car completely outclasses your opponents. In a lot of races, the game seems to promote the second option - which leads to a lot of repetition.

Crashing into other cars ought to do something, too - cause a spin out, something. Using car crashes as 'brakes' in turns is pretty stupid, yet it works really well in GT3.

And, the game's completely outclassed on every level by F355 - whenever I play GT3, I realize I'd rather just be playing F355.

  2. i already enjoy this game (i hated the first 2) but you know what would make it that much better? stop making the cpu racers FUCKING DRONES! i absolutely hate in racing games (tokyo xtreme IMMEDIATELY comes to mind) when the cpu cars ram you and you spin out yet they suffer no loss in speed or control. that is the only cause of frustration when i play a racing game. these games could be near perfect in my eyes if it wasnt for that. but as they stand they offer needless frustration.

  3. I think I would have enjoyed this game more if I knew more about cars. When it comes to tweaking, all I know is I want the car to go faster and turn better. Other than upgrading tires and the engine, I get completely lost. As for graphics, I thought GT3 was OK, but I really like the way Ridge City looks at night in RR5.

You can change the controls in the options so that the right analog stick controls the throttle. And the standard Dual Shock 2 buttons also allow for a small degree of analog throttle control.

Yep. Doesn't get much more half-assed then those analog buttons.

Make fun of those analog buttons all you want, but it does make a difference in the game.

Makes a difference in DMC as well, doesn't change the fact that it's poorly implemented and shoddily setup.

Yessir, nothing like 1cm maximum analog range to really help give that adjustable feel, ne? Might've been better if the DC and XBox triggers are exactly how control for racers on gamepads should be, and didn't show it up so badly.

Well, I never said that the Xbox and Dreamcast trigger buttons weren't better suited for driving games. In fact, I agree, they are much better than the alternative of analog face buttons and analog sticks. I was just simply (and politely) correcting someone who mentioned that Gran Turismo 3 did not have an analog option for throttle when I knew that there were not only one, but two options available. That's all.

  9. Okay, this is going to sound stupid, but I bought the PS2 w/GT3 deal and I've never popped in the game. I not a fan of the GT series and I still think Super Off Road is the best racing game.

So, why didn't you just buy the PS2 that didn't come with it? You could have saved a few bucks.
