Buy this and play Gunforce 2. It will all make sense.
I always considered In The Hunt the spiritual successor to Sqoon.
Also: did this game share some assets with the Metal Slugs? Some of the explosion animations look very slug-ey.

Dude, when was the last time you looked at a scanline filter? It is so much more than a 50% dark line these days.
This guy is doing some cool stuff:

There is the classic Blargg filter:
This filter is more of an LCD look:
This looks promising, but I don't have a computer that could run it so I don't know if it was ever implemented:

I assume you could tweak down that barrel distortion as you wanted. It is a bit much in those caps.

I meant doing scanlines with overlays, which is how MAME does it. It's customizable in that you can use different patterns, but it's a subtractive process, it always makes the picture darker.
Actual CRT/NTSC filters are a whole different discussion. Some of them look amazing. Although even then, when they throw in scanlines (and it's grossly oversimplifying to act as if these are "scanline filters" rather than CRT simulators), they inherently degrade the brightness of the image, but they're better balanced about it, so it's not as bad.
