That's the one faq that exists, of course I've found and read it. Says that the sound test option unlocks when you fill up the enemy encyclopedia and it definitely did not.
It's always dangerous going back and playing games from so long ago. Heck, I remember playing the arcade cabinet at Videohs! In St. Louis when I was in elementary school. For better or worse, Golden Axe holds up about the same as I remember. There are encounters that seem like too much luck regarding who gets priority, but that may be a lack of full understanding of the underlying mechanics. I still love all the different magic and whacking those damn gnomes, as well as the red dragon. What I had forgotten is how few bosses the game has despite its nine levels. I need to trophy farm this and the rest of the Sega Classics on PSN. You can't beat free for them. I just wish the selection was equal to the PC.
Beats out the Mass Effect and Bioshock games pretty handily. It's probably better than The Witcher 2, too. I'm trying hard to think of better big-budget singleplayer Western games this generation, and the only one that comes to mind that might beat this out is Mirror's Edge. Pretty gigantic accomplishment.
Is it as good as Deus Ex? I don't know. Both games have pretty sizable mechanical flaws, and I've been trying to weigh them out all day. I'll get to a conclusion eventually, but the fact that I'm thinking this much about it says a lot regarding this game's quality.
At times it felt like a dumb ROM hack of Red and Blue designed to make it feel like the cartoon.
Game was still the same core that I enjoyed with Red what, 13 years ago?
Shoutouts to Gengar. Had to locate my old link cable, but it was worth it. Dude's MVP.
I gotta say, this game starts off pretty shitty. Really easy for a while, and with the blandest visuals and music I've seen and heard in the series. The visuals and music don't get any better, later in the game, but the stages definitely ramp up near the end. The last few levels are genuinely great. Between the original, this, and Rondo of Blood, it's probably the worst of the bunch, but I'd sooner replay this than any of the Iga games.
