You are totally correct. The ghosts timing is way off from the XBLA original. I'm kinda bummed I spent $5 on this.
If so, I'd like to hear opinions, because something feels... off. Timing on the ghosts seems totally screwy compared to the XBLA version. For example, in the very beginning of the main maze, I go to the right, grap the pellet, eat the ghosts, totally clear the left, eat the ghosts again, go do the right side of the ghost house, and then go grab the third pellet. In the PSP version, the timing makes it nearly impossible to get all four ghosts in those first two chances, and then typically I can't make it in time to the third pellet (I always can in the XBLA version).
Then, when you get to the keys, in the PSP version on any of the pellet chances the fourth ghost always took long enough to come out that if I waited for him the combo timer would run out. That never, ever happened in the XBLA version.
I'm certainly open to the idea that I just need to get used to playing it on the PSP, but I've played a ridiculous amount of this game on XBLA. Really feels like something has changed in this port, either intentional or un-intentional.

Agh, and I was happy I could finally play this (don't own a 360).
Is the timing just different from the 360 version, or does it actually suck?
It's... weird. It makes old patterns totally not work at some parts, to a degree that I'm not sure what a comparable alternative would be. Like, as I said about the keys part, the last ghost just comes out so slow that I'm not at all certain you can get four per pellet, which, you know, is a huge deal. And then, as Timber mentioned to me on Facebook, other times the ghosts seem to come out of the ghost house too quickly. It's almost as if the time span of when the first ghost leave the house and when the last one does is completely different from the XBLA version.

I think it's more a combination of Pac-man moving a little slower and the power pellets lasting a touch shorter. You simply can't chain the pellet timer in many instances where you could in the 360 one, and that has nothing to do with ghost behavior.
It does seem like the ghosts play a far meaner game of chicken now, though. You go barreling at one and they're going to eat your damn face, you can't expect they'll take a last-second turn at forks like they did in the 360 rev.

Can't comment on the PSP game... But while we have a Pacman CE thread open, anybody play CE DX yet? That shit is addictive. Straight digital crack. Totally different feel with the threat of ghosts entirely removed and such emphasis put on steering at 20,000 mph.
It's fun, but it's no CE. It's the game you play when you need an ego boost and can get that from having a 30+ ghost combo just handed to you.

I dunno. To me it feels like the exact opposite of an ego boost when you have a 30+ combo handed to you and when the maze is done you find there are still 7000 people ahead of you on the leader boards. The game demands insane perfection.
