They might not pay an income tax but they are paying SS/Medicare/Medicaid taxes, as well as local sales tax, government fees, and maybe even state income tax. "The poor don't pay any taxes" is simply not true.

And SS tax takes up a larger chunk of their income than it does for a rich person, since it's capped at 6.2% of ~$108,000. A person making $1M a year pays ~.7% of their income towards SS versus 6.2% for anyone under the cap.

You could even argue all of the other taxes are unfairly aimed at poor/working people. Some dude making millions isn't hurt by a 5% sales tax

The whole "poor pay no taxes" thing is a political attack designed to exclude them and their needs from the political debate. The end goal here seems to be that we end up with a government designed to benefit the elite exclusively like Imperial Russia or France or something. Of course, we all know what happened there so maybe the rich are being penny wise and pound foolish.

Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire, Montana, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Virginia, Wisconsin, Utah and Wyoming are all 5% or less.
