Thread: Do some really old Genesis games not work on a Genesis 2?

  1. Do some really old Genesis games not work on a Genesis 2?

I just picked up a pretty old Genesis game, ZOOM!. I got in complete and its in prestine condition. I have never played it before either, just curious about the game so I bought it. Anyways, I take the game out and give a quick cleaning with some Alchohal diluted with water witha cue tip like I always do, and the thing is spotless right off the bat. I put it in my Genesis 2, and the "Produced or Licensed by Sega of America" thing comes up like always, and then its just black screen. I tired running it through a 32X, same thing. I use a 6-button Sega controller, tried holding down Mode as well, nothing. Could it be its too old for a Genesis 2? I had heard that some really old games don't work, just want to find out if I need a Genesis 1, or if the game is just bad.

  2. I'm not sure about Zoom but there were a few old Genny games that only worked on the Genesis 1, mostly EA games, I know that Populous was one of them.

  3. Thats what I was asking basicaly, if it was true that some old Genny games only worked on Genesis one. I am guessing thats my problem, because the game looks untouched. I have plans of buying an Genesis 1 just for the hell of it, so I guess I will play it when I get that.

I'm pretty sure that's the reason. Two other games that I know suffer from this are Zany Golf and Budokan, both from EA.

Edit: Oh yeah, I also recall that these two games won't even work on later Genesis 1s. Nice!

  5. i have a genny 2... i have zoom... works fine...

  6. That explains why the copy of Zany Golf I used to have did not work. So you have Zoom and it works on your Genesis 2 you say, drat! I think I will still keep it and hold out till I get a Genesis 1 though. I mean the game is clean, when I cleand it, no dirt came off, and the connectors are just sparkling. Cleanest Genesis game I own. Oh well I guess.

  7. I'm sure PGA Tour Golf won't work on the G2 either. I don't remember if Lakers vs. Celtics or Battle Squadron have this problem however.

    Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)

The game works fine, on my Nomad. I'm sure if the game works on a Nomad, it will work on any Genesis model.

Only games made during 1989 will have problems working on the Genesis 2 model. From what I've heard, there are only about 4 games that won't play on it, and those are from EA. I'd return the game cartridge, and keep the box/manual. Do they even show that the game came with a box?

Speaking of Zoom!, I think I'm one of the few fans of that game.

And Zoom! has the honor of being the first Western-made game ported to the Genesis.
