I don't know. When I was coming up everyone and their dog was enrolling or testing their skills. I don't know about the market now. I just hired my first ever person and out of 40 resumés we got we only bothered calling in 4 people. Everyone else never stood a chance. Just awful.

I was responding to your "little Drews and Yoshi's running around". Yoshi and I are not even remotely alike aside from the fact we believe people need to help themselves to make the most out of things. I don't believe in handouts - but not to the degree he does. I believe everyone should be given opportunity and basic things like education and healthcare. I also believe in healthy, common-sense regulation. But not over criminalization or regulation for nothing but regulation-sake.

What Diff said about predatory schools is true, too. The government should see this as a scam and warn people. After that if people still want to partake in the scam that's their fault. But at least the warning sides were there for people to prevent themselves from being saddled with massive debt for nothing.

Except I could have had kids by now and burdened myself in to a situation that wasn't conducive to my goals in life. Kids aren't conducive to my goals righ tnow so I don't fuck around unprotected or without a plan in place with the women I date. You're making excuses for "blue collar workers" - as if their kids came out of nowhere. But they made the choices they did. They had kids young and didn't explore their potential. THIS IS EXACTLY THE PROBLEM. We can help the dad of a blue-collar family re-educate himself with some low-cost school alts. But at the end of the day him and his family are going to have to struggle and band together to better their lives. Time is money. That's how it works. How it should work.

I won't comment on your complete lack of understanding of the programming course I'm learning. I've done extensive research before choosing it. It's one of the best in Canada and is only 2 crash semesters.

The only thing the Federal government is doing wrong is helping these people to continue on with their lives instead of jailing and/or deporting them and revoking them of their citizenship. We spend so much time trying to defend these poor people who were the "victims" of some scam or some sector of society that we've forgotten that they are ruining the lives that we all should be living.
Deporting them? What? This is so dumb.

Hey this thread is now the political thread lite, I guess.

I am with you there. I don't think BC understand that not every programming class in the graduate level is the same. My master requires 1 semester of C++, but they literally throw you in the middle of C++ programming in finance (even if you have never done any finance C++ programming, as most people with 1 semester). If you don't survive, too bad.

  3. I am learning web languages, too. I know programming theory is all the same fundamentally, it's the syntax that changes. Im looking forward to it. Back in highschool I always scored high marks in business and programming classes. 95% was my grade for c, c++ and visual basic. I'm learning phone stuff too like gestures and blob recognition (which is like kinect stuff, really).

I'll have to teach myself cocoa after I'm done too.

    I'm fucked.

  5. Honestly you're not fucked if you have a good portfolio. We're hiring for a JR position so we asked a lot of schools in the area. In my experience the best designers can draw and love art, too. Craigslist got the most responses. Only 2 were truly great candidates. The first one didn't accept our offer because she wanted to keep her options open and the second did. We were looking for a girl to help us out more than a guy. Studio is a bit of a dude ranch right now IMO. I wanted a different perspective in there.

Most of the resumés were from rude brown guys telling us "not everyone can be a designer". One guy told us not to bother calling him back if the position wasn't 15 dollars an hour. His work was hot garbage AND he had a negative attitude (and the position pays much more an hour than that).

If you have a strong portfolio you can do well. It's all about the portfolio. Sometimes someone would look good then we would go to their personal website and see a waterfall of shitty work. Dead giveaway they were terrible but had good art directors (or forged their work). Your resume / web portfolio itself is a portfolio piece.

  6. Who are these people!?

  7. The weird thing is, I love editorial design, and I'm extremely passionate about it, but I sort of fell into it and I'm starting to think I'm just not good enough. I went back to school get into the book/magazine industry, doing whatever. I was told by the program director that there are no jobs in design so stick to marketing or even production. But I've never even had a callback for a marketing job* or production. Just design. Thing is, I'm having a shitty time making a living off design right now.

Good enough to be functional, but not good enough to be hired full-time.

*Actually, I had one call back for (creative) marketing. But I went to high school with someone who worked there, went for an internship interview there and they loved me. But I had to accept elsewhere because of bullshit reasons. They were hiring later, but they went for someone with a little more experience.

  8. Some samples (hope this isn't you Brisco):

The illustrations I can live with. But those logos are so bad for so many TECHNICAL reasons before I even consider getting to the creative idea behind them.

Buh. Aside from the horrific style, why didn't he force "marketing" onto the next line?

Wouldn't it be hilarious if it was my portfolio
