Thread: Official Xbox One Thread

  1. On top of the easier "letting my homie borrow dis" concept.

This is going to be a test "just how stupid is the American consumer?" I'm hoping not that stupid and this thing fails, but I wouldn't bet on it.

  3. Why does it have to be that? You know there are intelligent people all over that come to different final conclusions.

  4. The only thing that scares me is that microsoft has to be smart enough to know this will turn a lot of people off. But I'm sure some number cruncher has figured out how many people they need to retain at the higher profit margin vs how many they have now at a lower margin. Like, "it's okay if we lose half the market because under the new way of doing things we will make twice the money, and as those other people come back we will make even more."
I just have to hope they overestimated brand loyalty.
Since you can't believe what anyone says, all the bellyaching I'm hearing right now from customers is not only anecdotal, but meaningless.

I don't care how well it sells as a set top box. I just hope it fails catastrophically in attach rate and any other actual gaming metric. If Microsoft wants to go take on (and lose to) Apple and Google, great. If I still had fun money left after buying an Oculus Rift, a PS4, a new phone, an iPad Mini 2, a 3DS XL, and a Wii U, I might even consider one!

  6. I finally watched the stupid press conference for this. I'm sort of behind.

I think the high OS and memory overhead on this thing is going to lead to a pretty noticeable gap in the quality of graphics between this and PS4. The TV and multitasking stuff doesn't seem like it's worth the cost of having to build games around the Windows kernel. PC will smoke this thing, where PS4 games will potentially outperform PC for a minute because of the lower OS overhead.

The real factor that will decide if this thing stays competitive is price, and I have a feeling Microsoft is going to be very aggressive on that front. There have already been rumors of an ad-subsidized SKU that could possibly put this thing down in like the $200 range. Meanwhile, Sony has been talking about trying to cut down on its hardware losses this time around, which would imply a $500+ price point. That could seriously tilt the scales in MS's favor, at least at the start of the gen.

  7. Paul Thurrott said that an ad-subsidized $300 box was killed at the last minute. I know gamers don't follow him, but he's been covering MS for a decade and most of his stuff ends up turning out right.

They're not taking them on though! Apple didn't release some terrible TV hookup passthrough thing. Google did and dropped it like a hot potato.

Microsoft is "fighting" a battle all by itself in territory nobody really cares about. "Own the living room" is so 2001.

Aside from Windows, which is still riding momentum from years ago, it's the only battle they have a chance of winning. Maybe they're tired of finishing third like this console generation and in smart phones.

  10. The only thing that could motivate me to get one is if it gets hacked to the same extent as the first XBOX console, and I don't see that happening.
