The card system itself doesn't really do anything to push sales. It mainly builds loyalty in regular customers and more importantly allows you to track them, which the grocery stores really want because they are by far the biggest source of income.
I'm always surprised when I mention that to someone and they had no idea. One of the first things I did with those was see if I could ring up a single product at the discounted price. They track your spending, like what products you buy and what brands of those products. It's not just encouraging people to buy in bulk.

The coupons that print out are tied to your purchase history, no?
Weak.
Pay cash for shit.
I buy every console (eventually), but this one is a no-go. Hell, I even bought a SpiderStation 3 once the price came down to something I felt was more reasonable. But this? This is the first time I've actively cheered for a game machine to fail. I can already watch TV on every device and appliance I own, so no thanks to that. And the always/sometimes/always-on requirement can suck me sideways. In fairness, they had already lost my business after I suffered one too many Red Rings, but it was kind of them to cement the deal.
Nintendo is jacking off in the corner, which means Sony is one bad decision away from pushing me into the loving arms of the Master Race.
