*edit* Frog already brought up the disparity in time of release of the NES/SMS.
Whether or not you like it is irrelevant. For better or worse, there's no game controller out there that isn't directly influenced by Nintendo's work. Not a single one.
Designing and selling hardware is one of Nintendo's core competencies. Not just the hardware, but making games that are great on that hardware. The idea that they would be better off as just another 3rd party in the crowd is just dumb. There's no reason for them to do that.
I've never seen any report say that it is a good idea for a company to throw out a wildly profitable and successful core specialty where the company has decades of institutional knowledge.

It's not about being a stockholder. Look at Sega now. Look at, as I said, Apple in the mid 1990's. If you like their games - well their hardware comes with it. Nintendo couldn't just throw out their entire hardware division and come out EXACTLY THE SAME on the software side. The two are linked. If you like Nintendo games you have to take Nintendo hardware.
Sega has been run by monkeys who fling feces to see what sticks for years and years. There is no comparison there. Sega made great games and couldn't market. Nintendo masterfully markets overrated games.
Anybody found any Aliens show-floor info yet?
