But there's not even really an ending, and when the credits are over it just kicks you into a SpecOps lobby.
That's exactly how I would explain it too. I wrapped up the campaign on Hardened last night and it gave me exactly what I expected, plus a ton of really impressive environments and desctruction that are easily the best of the series. Towards the end of the game it seemed to be one 'holy shit' moment after another Awesome shit that would never make any sense in reality, and would clearly kill anyone who was involved, but makes for a killer finale to this "story" arc.

Sounds like what Black Ops did with the Zombie mode.
This game got old real quick. At least the mp did.
I'm pretty salty they didn't include those wager match gametypes.
Yeah, I felt like I could've gotten more of an ending. I got this game for Christmas and mostly for the campaign and survival mode (Battlefield 3 mostly for multiplayer). I liked the campaign in this one a whole lot and was sad when it finally ended on a defining and conclusive note. I thought Modern Warfare 2 was better in terms of the campaign (nothing will ever beat the Washington D.C. mission for me) but this one was not far behind and was more overall crazy. I wish it had been longer. I do agree with the game play being shallow...this game is all about the environment and scripted events with everything outside of that being simple and basic. I still loved what they did with the environment and story though. The World War III thing was an awesome path to take.
I do really like the survival mode. I haven't played it online but have played with friends several times and had a blast.
One funny thing I found about the campaign in this was how easy the two sides came to peace talks. Russia decides to invade the US and the Russian President wants to negotiate peace a couple of weeks/months later like the Russians didn't completely destroy Washington D.C and New York City and that a nuclear bomb didn't go off?

I know its dangerous to delve into the MW storyline, but I think part of the reason it's so easy as you put it is they have TF 191 to blame for the nuke blast, and Makarov for the Airport incident, basically saying its been terrorists the whole time and we're really big friends aren't we?
I was pretty disappointed at the level of difficulty (easy) on Veteran. With the exception of one or two areas, this wasn't on par with other COD's/MW's on vet.
I really enjoyed MW3's campaign, from what I played of it. Three missions in, I could tell that it was vastly superior to the horrible abortion that was the Black Ops campaign.
It's not the type of thing that will make anyone who hates COD/MW campaign mode reconsider. But for those who like it, it's good stuff.
Whenever I finish with Dark Souls, I'll revisit it.
