We can also apparently powerlevel each other by using a high level character in inferno to carry a lowbie. Can also be done solo on the PS3 using two controllers and local co-op.
I beat the level 17 joint and online play opened up. Once it says B routes are open just go to the gate or stables and you can connect (so yes, you should totally have it, Chux). I just ran a couple online dungeons in a row and got some nice gear.
You'd have to play by yourself for the first half anyway, and there are AI partners that can make things a lot easier.
+ The PS3 doesn't have the slowdown that occurs on the Vita.
- The PS3 has to use a mouse cursor for finding secrets and activating runes.
I like having it on Vita so that I can have it perpetually turned on and just do a dungeon in the middle of other stuff. Regardless, I like knowing that when I get the other version I can just transfer all my stuff to it so I won't be starting from scratch.
The slowdown can get bad but it never lasts for long and the game is still fast enough that I can't say it's been detrimental. It's not nearly as god-awful and long as it was in Odin Sphere and I haven't seen it occur in any bosses outside of Medusa (and even then it still never came close to being an Odette fight).
The mouse cursor really isn't that bad since it's not for combat or anything, it's just an awkward thing to do when hunting for secrets and telling the slave to open doors. You can still use it on the Vita you just also have the better option to touch what you want instead.
