I was going to say give it time and use Spielberg as an example. But 1941.

  2. I liked this movie and would surely call myself a Tarantino fan, but I think I've had enough exploitation movie homage. It's beginning to feel like less of an endeavor to transcend a genre and more like, you know, actual exploitation of an audience or a weird reluctance to confront matters of gravitas with honesty.

And it doesn't make his films more personal. His oeuvre is one of the most impersonal that I've encountered, really. I'm ready to learn what Tarantino is about other than "I worked at a video rental place for a long time," but he's not ready to reveal anything other than that.

Yeah, Spielberg is great but the guy makes a movie a year now. He's tarnishing his brand, IMO.

I should have qualified it by saying "recent batting average". QT's average for the past decade definitely beats Spielberg's.

I say this even as someone who enjoyed War Horse and Crystal Skull more than most.

    And A.I.

    And The Lost World.

    And Crystal Skull.

Is that a necessary precondition to being a good filmmaker? I'm not so sure.

These movies transcend their genre inspirations. I think that's been true ever since Pulp Fiction.

  6. That was the point Yellerdog!
Spielberg's first 20 years was very good, but 1941.
Then as time went on...shit got whack.
Give QT time...shit will get whack.
But unlike Spielberg who directed 13 movies in 20 years (plus TV shows and produced a ton of shit), QT has put out...8?

  7. Tarantino rips off his own movies too much.

I really liked the 'speaking in a different language so people can't understand you' scene in Inglorious Basterds and the "Everyone can leave.. EXCEPT YOU SOPHIE" scene from Kill Bill. Then Django Unchained also had those exact scenes.

  8. Speaking of which, this movie was a little light in the Julie Dreyfus foot fetishizing department.

There was only one female foot shot I noticed!

  10. Best director batting average imo is Jaco Van Dormael, but he's only made like 3 movies in the last 25 years. Todd Solondz is great too, though I guess Palindromes is a little weak.
