Is that a necessary precondition to being a good filmmaker? I'm not so sure.

I think a great film, like any great piece of of fiction, is one that is says something about its creator and/or about everyone, yeah. Otherwise it's just about guys doing stuff.

It's the weakest of the three, but I still liked it a whole lot, especially the theatrical cut.

I liked 1941. It had Christopher Lee as a nazi and they drove a tank through a paint factory.

The dialog was a little ham fisted though. It felt more like a Animal House or Porkies than a real SS movie.
