True story: 6 out of 10 people in a city seem to have either an iPhone or a Smartphone, and every company that matters is scrambling to make them happy (because that's where the money's at in 2011).
I resisted, then felt really dumb for doing so! They're like little 'hitchiker's guide to the galaxy' units for cities.
Having one where you are would do you no good, so you're probably ok. Nobody catering to that market is giving a shit about rural areas.

This game was fun for a few weeks. Then you realize there's not much depth to it.
Also: fuck turrets.
This game was never fun. Sadly.
It can't hold Quake III's shoes, but it's fun with the right group.

I'm fairly aware of the situation. It is the new current "buzz" money making trend. If I was so inclined, I could make an ap and sell it on the ap store. I'd just need to pay that 100$ fee and hope I can sell enough downloads to make my money back. Anything after that is profit.
But public sentiment is over stated. It always is for new tech.
"The new hot thing" thinking is stupid. Always has been.
