Thread: Carmack: Mobile Devices to Overtake PS3, 360 in Two Years

  1. Docking station. Bluetooth. Done.

  2. In 2 years the new consoles will be out already, so this is a non-story. I don't think we will hit that moment where a phone is more powerful than a current gen console, but it's not hard to see happening when you are comparing tech on a 5+ year cycle vs a 6 month cycle.

Imagine somebody saying this exact same thing back in the days of DVD. Who cares if streaming video will have higher resolution than a DVD in a few years? By then bluray will be out already, so streaming video is a non-story.

That is what this sounds like. Yeah, new consoles will be out. Yeah, they will be more powerful than their contemporary mobiles. Just don't be surprised if those future consoles end up not being all that relevant in comparison to the mobile devices.

The next generation of consoles will be relevant for a few years at least. But from everything I have read, that's the end of the road. As stormy said, the six month cycles for portables devices will catch them up again pretty quickly, and there will be no more large leaps for consoles to make.

Except I didn't say anything about relevance, the statement Carmack made was purely about processing power. And what he said is so glaringly obvious. XBox and PS3 are ancient.

  6. People still listen to John Carmack?
