Thread: Ridley Scott to direct Blade Runner 2, or 0

  1. A new movie set in the Blade Runner universe has potential. This doesn't sound like a remake or a sequel, neither of which strike me as a good idea.

That said, if they're starting fresh story-wise, they have some big shoes to fill, especially without PK Dick to help them this time.

  2. Can Hollywood make an original movie anymore?

This summer's lineup has been embarrassing, even going by usual summer movie standards.

Umm... a unique story in this setting sounds like the best idea possible so long as the writing is good. Then they don't have to worry about screwing up original characters and canon that people love so much and can build from there.

I honestly haven't cared this little about seeing movies in a long while. I think Thor did me in. I wouldn't even limit it just to the summer but the whole year. I did earnestly enjoy the Lincoln Lawyer back in February. It was very well made. But that's about it.

  4. I feel that Soldier has a lot of really cool ideas that were basically ruined by generic and fairly shitty direction.

Oh yeah, Paul W.S. Anderson. That explains it.

I think it goes up and down. There's a lot of idea saturation in movies now because there's so much to go back on but there are still worthwhile movies that get released by Hollywood.

Seriously. Everything is either a comic book adaptation, novel adaptation, or remake/reboot.

It's hard for me to get excited about going to the theater nowadays.

Why should they bother when so many idiots are going to go see The Avengers in 3D?

    I'm looking at you TNL.

Seeing people say things like this makes me wonder of we even saw the same movie. It might not have been on Dark Knight's level, but it was at least on par with Iron Man 1. The writing and acting were well above average, stemming largely from Branagh's decision to treat it not as a comic book movie, but as a dysfunctional family drama where the family in question happens to be made of warrior gods. And the action wasn't half bad either, even if it wasn't quite 300. Really the only thing you can legitimately complain about is the look of Asgard; the comparisons to video game cutscenes were earned, I readily admit. Convincing fantasy worlds pretty much require exotic location shoots augmented with special effects (a la Lord of the Rings), not just green screens.

And no, this isn't just my love for the character biasing my perceptions; I have similar affection for the Green Lantern, and if anything, it made me hate that movie all the more for how wrong they got it.

  9. Iron Man 1 was terrible.

  10. You're entitled to your opinion of course, but you do realize you're in the extreme minority saying that, right?
