The Chargers should have punted. The odds of hitting a 53 yard field goal are less than 50%, but the odds of driving down the field for 60+ yards is probably even less.
The Chargers needed to win the game outright. Their odds of making the FG were higher than converting a normal 4th and 10 play there and subsequently making a shorter FG. They were not going to get the ball with any reasonable time left if they punted.
Did you hear that crazy ass stat last night? Brees is the first QB ever to pass for 30,000 yards in seven seasons, and he has five games left in the seventh season. Add that to approaching Unitas' record for consecutive games with a TD pass, Marino's career record of games with 350+ passing yards, etc.
I also enjoyed how ELIte padded his numbers in garbage time. If he can continue to do that while he's being fileted again by Rodgers next week and then beyond, he'll finish a great statistical season.
