Thread: 3-D movies are already heading for the exit.

The theaters themselves might have some financial difficulties and could largely go under, but the movie industry will just redo their finances and find other ways to charge people at home. Sales of DVDs outpace theater sales aside from blockbusters, making the theater more a source of advertising for many movies than it is the primary location for those to earn money.

One of the big issues is that the decline of anything related to the movie industry doesn't truly hurt it, it just means they have to switch focus while others take the fall. If not theaters then DVDs, if not DVDs then streaming. Even with the decline of theaters in America lots of those movies will continue to make large amounts overseas, making it almost a non-issue sometimes. You're talking about the entire world deciding to not support an entertainment industry. That seems pretty unlikely to me.

  3. I've never been to an arthouse theater (or any theater) that serves beer, but I've also only ever been to a handful outside of New York and Philly.

  4. Missing the boat, IMO.

Well, the individual can either cope with it or not support it and find something else to do. Movies aren't food; you don't need them to live.

There's one near me that does and I think there's a couple other larger theaters with mainstream movies in Cleveland that do. It's a pretty rare thing, but nice.

You're technically correct, but not in any way that really matters to the points you keep bringing up. If you personally are not going to support them like you said then keep doing your thing, but that doesn't mean Hollywood is going to have a rude awakening on their current track or that major theater problems stem from things like snack prices. If you're going to say there's a problem you should probably be aware that most people won't cold turkey quit as a vague attempt to fix an issue that probably won't be solved by doing so.

I think this is really the main reason I get bent out of shape if a place doesn't take cards, or at the very least has minimum purchase requirements when taking a card. I understand that card fees can cut into the bottom line of a small business trying to stay afloat, but at least understand the changing marketplace and put up a "cash or check only" sign (or $10 minimum or whatever). It's only fair.

It's the very height of bullshit to order take-out and only find out "oh no eez cash onree" when you hand them your card. No, it's certainly not the end of the world to have to run to an ATM, but if you're the kind of douche that can't even be bothered hanging up a "cash only" sign to begin with when you're trying to run a business, you deserve to be left with a load of Chinese food no one's ever going to return to pay for.

I don't live there, so I don't care. But if I was visiting, I would certainly abide by the bartering norms of the area.

I'm assuming you're trying to say that it's all cash-and-carry over there?

  9. I've read that requiring a minimum purchase for credit cards is against the law. Confirm/deny?
