Was messing around with Events instead of World Tour, and I think it is really the way to go when you hit the harder difficulty in World Tour. First off, when you reach lvl 4 affinity for any car maker, all the upgrades are free. Playing Events allows you to play any race that the car is eligible in, plus you can tone down the difficulty. Medium seems good, though sometimes you can push it to hard. Easy is way too easy. This way, you get cash, affinity and then you don't have to worry about spending money on upgrades, just newer and better cars.
I've got a few expensive cars in mind, but now I don't have to worry about spending almost as much on the upgrades as I did the car itself.
