Thread: Ive got that old school feeling, whooaaaaooo, that old school feeling

  1. Ive got that old school feeling, whooaaaaooo, that old school feeling

Im sitting here at work... am Im thinking about Contra Hard Corps., which I just got, and Tactics Ogre GBA, and Legend of Oasis, and Ninja Spirit... I feel like drawing the characters, and Im thinking about how I can do things to get through the games better and whatnot....

This is exactly what I used to do when I was a bit younger... in middle school. Thinking about Warsong and Rocket Knight Adventures. Those games inspire ideas of new games in me. Makes me want to make games. While I love newer games, they dont instill that same feeling... and Ihave no idea why. Maybe I'm drawing on nostalgia with these newly aquired games, but it doesnt really feel like it. There was just something magical from back in the day.

Heh, I wonder if people that got thier start on the PSX will feel the same way about games on it five years from now.

My friend was talking about how many truely great games seem to be coming out, and it is so true. Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Panzer Dragoon, Murakumo, Otogi, and justsoo many others whos names escape me now. They all seem like such fantastic games. JSRf, and Eternal Darkness and Rez already this year, all of em great games*! Some of them even give me that same feeling i used to get while reading those old gaming magazines, and looking at the previews of something like Super Metroid. Zelda and Eternal Darkness being two of them. It isnt quite the same, but its still similer. I cant help but get the feeling we are about to hit a resurgance of games with that "old school" flair. They dont neccesserilly play old school, but they have that magic to them. Even with the new Contra game... I think it shows a place for what was once to be new again.

Ok, since im on this nice little rambling tangent.... I work in a videogame store that sells anything in gaming. We have Atari 2600's and Colecovisions, and NES's and PS2's and Xboxes and everything inbetween. I have been very suprized at how many people come in and buy an old NES and a bunch of games. They comment that new games are too complicated for them or something... maybe they'll just say they like the old games better. These people are usually in thier late 20's-early 30's. What I find intresting is that I really think there is a place for these old games, and that they would sell well in todays market. Thing is, games like these done today, arent marketed in a way to get people that arent into videogames to know about them. I dunno.... Im kinda just rambling for anyone that cares to listen(read). Im done.

Often when I make a thread about a game from 20 years ago, I think:

20 years from now there some other guy in his 20's asking if anyone remembers old-school stuff like Jet Grind Radio.

  3. (off topic - sorta)

Last night I was in bed thinking about the consoles I had purchased and the events and circumstances surrounding each one. I starting thinking along those lines because many years ago yesterday I purchased a SegaCD (the real manly tray loader ) from Kay-Bee Toys and got $15 off on an Independence Day sale. Damn was I happy.

I remember getting every single one of the consoles I own, and even what games I bought with a few of them, but I am totally unable to remember any part of getting my PSX.

Hell, if I didn't have it in pieces in a box in the garage (AC power board troubles, still trying to fix it) I would swear I never owned it. It's funny that I remember the systems around that time, but the PSX has been blocked from my memory. I can remember absolutely nothing about getting it at all. I just remember playing Warhawk and Battle Arena Toshinden one day in my room.

Maybe it has something to do with the (lack of) games that I wanted it for. I got the Genesis for Sonic and the SNES for Mario but I don't really remember WHY I got a PSX.

    Strange.

Maybe those experiences playing FFVII and VIII have had more dubious effects that just extreme nausea and numerous headaches.

  4. Six, I know what you mean. Because of certain circumstances, when I got my PSX, it was only because it was the only available gaming platform that had games that intrested me. I dont really feel anything special tword it.

  5. I don't remember much about purchasing my PSX either. I just remember buying it when the dual shock first came out. I remember coming home and playing the demo of hot shots golf. I don't remember buying any games when i first bought it, or if there were any games that i bought the system for. My first distinct memory was having to pick between buying Xenogears or Metal Gear Solid(they hit stores within a day of each other). I went with MGS, but what is most interesting is that 4 years later, those are my 2 favorite games on the PSX.

  6. No more thoughts or opinions on this?

  7. I'm kind of worried that the state of videogames will be such that in 10-15 years, kids will be reminiscing about the old days, when "real games" like Metal Gear Solid 2 and Final Fantasy X were around.

  8. Well Im hoping it doesnt get that bad now....

So no one has any games that are on thier way out or just recently released that give you the same feeling as older games.... and are NOT on GBA?

  9. i tend to get that way whenever a newer version of a classic comes out but usually in the end am disappointed. the new shinobi and ninja gainden give me goosebumps but something will bring them down. either too short or something. i remember buying my jaguar and how that brought back my love of atari (since the 2600 was the first machine i ever owned). man the memories. the way the tom chip would hiss loudly during gameplay...how it smelled like those electric racetracks...how it died 3 days later. it was fine tho, i got another but yeah, lately ive beceome less excited about upcoming releases and just dont care when i get a game or new system anymore whereas before i wasa preordering mo-fo. mebbe it lessens the effect of being let down....i dunno.

  10. The PSX and PS2 are the only two consoles I never bought on their release date. It took Castlevania:SotN to convince me I needed the first one. Less games now a days get my attention, leaving me free to pick up all the older games I missed due to limited funds.

Of course, when I think of video game nostalgia, I think back to playing asteroids or space invaders at my local roller rink. Yeah, I know I'm dating myself.
