What strikes me most about his comments is not so much that he's acknowledging what we all already know -- that money talks in Washington -- it's the indignant entitlement that comes through. He finds it audacious that an elected official would betray him, not for a lesser campaign contributor, but for his constituents. When he talks about "putting their job on the line" he means "doing something against the popular opinion of the public that elects him." That's what's really disturbing to me.

Chris Dodd was a Senator for three terms. He was a blatant shill for corporate interests his last 3 years on the job. He knows how DC works. I don't think he finds it audacious, just surprising. Like, this never happens - this is not how DC works. In DC, if giant companies lobby for years and spend a ton of money to get a bill passed, the bill passes.

I think, based on his blackout day comments, he also finds it uncouth that tech companies rallied the public against the law. These sorts of laws are supposed to be debated in backrooms and shit, not out in the open like this. It's why Congress spends its entire day naming post offices and congratulating sports teams. The real work is done at night.

Remember ACTA, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement? This is even more scary than SOPA or PIPA.

Under the provisions of ACTA, copyright holders will be granted sweeping direct powers to demand ISPs remove material from the Internet on a whim. Whereas ISPs normally are only forced to remove content after a court order, all legal oversight will be abolished, a precedent that will apply globally, rendering the treaty worse in its potential scope for abuse than SOPA or PIPA.

The groups pushing the treaty also want to empower copyright holders with the ability to demand that users who violate intellectual property rights (with no legal process) have their Internet connections terminated, a punishment that could only ever be properly enforced by the creation of an individual Internet ID card for every web user, a system that is already in the works.

The White House circumvented Congressional approval by presenting this as an "international treaty". The FSF is against ACTA, since it would require that DRM protected media not be playable with free or open-source software. The EFF doesn't like it either.
