Thread: Completion Thread 2012: Hai! Dekimashita!

Haha, yeah some tragedy. I get what you mean and saw things the same ways for a while (regarding what is considered a beat or not). It's fun writing in this thread, or reading what games other people have beaten, all in the name of trying to slice away your backlogs. To be fair, there are still games I don't count here (see: a lot of shmups), but if I do spend a long time playing one game and its beaten, who cares? Sure, someone could be juvenile and just post 1000 2 minute games just to prove a point, but if that is what someone wants to try, go at it. I just enjoy talking about games I play and when they are games that would probably raise an eyebrow here in SeriousTown, I try to go over it multiple times or complete more of the game to make it feel valid. Beating Find Mii 11 times over the span of months or taking one fighting game and completing all the challenges, story modes and finding all the endings in a fighting game should definitely be counted. Just do what you want.

    42. Hard Reset

Beaten. This was an honest surprise. Great cyberpunk look and feel. Reminded me a lot of Blade Runner in setting and at least Deus Ex 1 in the heavy blues and blacks (or any sci-fi, for that matter). Playing an FPS in 2012 with health packs was...refreshing. It seems to be getting a lot of flack for following its roots, which seems odd to me. It's frantic, strafe-and-shoot gameplay and I enjoyed it. Some of the areas are really stunning, too, like breaking a window on a tall building and getting a nightlife view of the metropolis, with an advertisement blimp beaming its searchlight on you and the rest of the city. The two guns you get in the game are kind of fluffed up by having the same type of attacks (more or less), but I liked the division of classic, physical damage from a more mechanical gun to a high tech plasma rifle aces with splash damage. A lot of the upgrades are more data-based increases, but to someone who wouldn't notice there's an okay enough level of growth. Fun game, didn't really dig the story though.

    43. Gunstar Heroes

Beaten on Hard on Steam. I was trying to find Lunatic Heroes/the Gunstar Prototype, but couldn't find it and settled for buying this another time. The Steam version is "okay" but has a few graphical hiccups that kind of bothered me. Still one of my Top 3 favourite games. Tried to go through the whole game using Lightning + Fire (or the Lightsaber approach). I'd really like to find the Proto, because of how funny the Engrish is, or just seeing damage numbers pop out of the player. Going to avoid the idea of spending $400 for it on eBay.

    44. Gunstar Super Heroes-J

Beat the Japanese version of Gunstar Super Heroes for GBA. Beaten on Hard with Red (I never play with Blue, could never get into Fixed Shot). Went through the Japanese version to hear the audio. Seven Force is way cooler in it. In English, he honestly sounds very bored. Love how wacky the game is. Very Treasure as usual. Still not as good as the original in terms of gameplay, but unlike most people, I appreciated them trying to mix the formula a bit. More melee moves, a sword instead of a throw mechanic and three weapons with cannon alternatives is still fun enough. I used all six weapon modes more than most of the ones in GH (I just played with Seeker as a kid because I was awful at it).

Makes me want to try and beat Alien Soldier for once.

  2. Yeah, this thread has always been about posting about what I've been playing more than it has about some competition. If people want to list a fighting game they credit-fed, no issue.

maybe it's the numbers, but hell if i'm gonna stop using them

  3. Fighting games are games too, so beating one, especially the way Rocca described, definitely qualifies it to be on someone's list of games they've completed. Not every game is a 50 hour RPG with a million sidequests, some are easily beatable in a day or even an hour or two. It's still a game that you started, played, and completed, which is the only real criteria imo.

So, one play through as one character is what, 12 fights? 30 minutes? And you barely need to know anything about the game to get through it? I've had friends sit down and slap buttons on a stick in Soul Cal and finish the game in like 12 minutes. Chalk it up, one more down!

I don't particularly care since no one set rules, but it's stupid.

I only count arcade games (including fighters) if I 1 cc it, which generally takes some skill.

  6. Oh, shush.

  7. It's easily one of the more ambiguous kinds of games to "complete", considering how some people will do what you described and never play again, while others will continue honing their skills and playing for years. But at some point you will consider the game completed in your own eyes. I technically beat SSF4 within a week of it's release, having gone through arcade with 10 or so characters and doing some trials and stuff, but I didn't consider that one "completed" until a couple of months ago when I got one of the last achievements and had 589 hours into it. On the flip side of that, I considered Skullgirls beaten after finishing with half the cast and doing all the training, as there wasn't much left for me in the game outside of silly achievements. It's not a big deal really, but if it's bothersome you can just look at someone's list and think "I know there's a fighting game or shmup in there, I'm deducting 2 from his overall total".

I think you care enough to make a slight mention of it. It bugs you because it's a tremor on an unwritten rule here and one you want to point out, which is fine. Look at it this way. I'll play one fighter for 80 hours and go through all the challenges (to which, I do have to know enough about the game, move cancelling and moderate motor skills to get through). I'll play that game for 80 hours. Then I'll beat a NES game or even just Gunstar Heroes in one. I liked both. I'd like to talk about both. So why doesn't Marvel count? Or Gunstar, maybe? Should it? Shouldn't it? There are sweet NES games being mentioned here which aren't that long either. What if I beat the Tower in Mortal Kombat? That shit is long as hell. Does that count? Is it a matter of time or principle here? Both games received some well-deserved playtime, both are underlined by my acceptance that I've gone through them thoroughly, neither of them felt rushed, so who says to make rules about this? I know why you feel that way and you can see it that way if you want, but if I see people posting about an hour long game they played, I totes don't care and just read about their experience.

It's the Completion Thread, not the Completed With Arbitrary Qualifiers Thread. The game is completed regardless of how many times one continues. Certain games don't magically become special because you did so without dying ever. That's just poppycock.
