the duck/dodge is kind of squirrley (#1 thing is to not pre-emptively try and dodge attacks, watch and listen to the npcs for their start ups and duck/roll accordingly) and the combat can feel sluggish, but it gets pretty fun once you've gotten the hang of it

Also, I'm pretty sure it is bullshit and they want you to grind your way to victory. You guys who are enjoying it have just figured out the unintended method of playing it where it isn't entirely terrible. The delay on everything is just unacceptable. I played some of the GBA game after this and it was buttery smooth joy, and made me dislike this game even more.
