Thread: Double Dragon: Neon (PSN, XBLA)

  1. Yeah, going between the demo and the GBA game was kinda crazy. Even the arcade original, when not in slowdown (admittedly the game spends probably half of its time in slowdown), is faster.

Also, I'm pretty sure it is bullshit and they want you to grind your way to victory.
Honest to God once I figured out the dash and roll mechanics I can kick ass at high speed with a new save file. It's very much a twitch mechanic reacting to the enemy wind up animations, like a slower Punchout!! from a side view...only you can dash up and initiate the attack yourself instead of waiting for an attack.

Also, notice how the grab in this game goes right into a throw instead of allowing for the knee? The game wants you to throw often and throw quick. Crowd control.

Notice how enemies stay down for so long? The ground punch is super powered. Abuse the hell out of it. You can ground punch right out of a run, so dash accross the whole screen to use it if you have to.

Notice how the uppercut goes into a launch? You can throw right off of that launch. Do it. Crowd control. Run after the throw and ground punch.

Also, if it flies it can't stop you from throwing. Those annoying hoverbots are actually weapons ripe for the tossing.

The GBA game is still the best Double Dragon ever. Probably the best beat'em up ever. If I had to rank the major DD games (in equal valued cluster groups, because hell no I can't put them individually in order)

    God tier games:
    DD Advance
    NES DD 2

    Great ones:
    PCE DD 2
    Neon
    Arcade DD2

    Good ones:
    NES DD1
    NES DD3
    Arcade DD1
    Super 4

    Not so good:
    Genesis DD1, 2
    SMS DD1

    Ha ha ha, no:
    Arcade, Genesis DD 3
    iOS
    DD 5

    Not really playable:
All those 1 button PC/Amiga ports

    Noooooooooo!:
    Atari 2600
    C 64

The 20,000 totally distinct different versions that I didn't even mention are outside of my play experiance.

  5. Ok seriously Art and design by Genzo of Udon crew, duck/counter system that feels awesome when pulled off; customizable special moves and a flow of combat that makes you look like a badass. This game is awesome, and accomplishes what few beatemups do nowadays. If you havnt given this game a chance (second chance?) you are missing out.

  6. maxed training wheels and spin kick almost makes it feel like I'm cheating, I'm just steamrolling double dragon difficulty without much resistance now (except those ninja hoes that I just hit on chapter 5, fuck them and their wacky hitboxes)

I know, right? I have absorb instead of training wheels, and it got to the point where enemies couldn't hurt me as fast as I could heal from hitting them.

I keep at least one stance at an unpowered level aside from random pickups and use it to keep the game from rolling over for me. Once you get to the second playthrough (dragon mode), you're just like a god in your most powerful stance.

I also enjoy starting fresh games on new save files for the full challenge. And when you want to tear through an army like it was tissue paper, hey, the original save file is still there.

And really when it comes down to it, you're not going to get to God power without using mithril at the tapesmith, so the option is totally there to just not do that.
