He is effusive and guileless and without affectation and a fun guy. So what if he's dumb. Not his fault. His speech about love at the end is super endearing.
He's set up as a joke character composed of everything that would perfectly annoy Charles, but yeah that speech at the end kind of wins you over.

And yeah any time you go into his head and hear all that self-loathing it's pretty terrible. I guess it's fairly standard stuff so a lot of people can identify with at least some of those thoughts. That waitress thing was totally agonizing.
