I don't know how much these F2P games are really making though. I mean they seem profitable, but they're also low budget. I'm not sure you can cover AAA production values that way.

Since there are games besides shooters with vanity items, no. Feel free to browse some at your leisure. Not all of the games in that list are FPS' but a lot are, and they generally break down into purchasing vanity items and immediate obtainment of things that can otherwise be unlocked over time (like loadouts in Tribes: Ascend).
