Despite the utterly ludicrous premise of Bubba Ho-Tep (an elderly Elvis and a black man that believes he's John F. Kennedy fighting a redneck mummy in a southern retirement home holy shit that's the greatest sentence I've ever written), there's a lot more going on with this movie thematically than there initially seems. It's as much about how we as a society treat our elderly as it is a black supernatural comedy. Bruce Campbell shows some serious acting chops as Elvis. I love the man, but I think even his most die-hard fans have to admit he's usually just playing some variant of himself/Ash regardless of what movie he's in. Imo, this is the best work he's ever done. I've seen this movie at least a dozen times now, and I'm still shocked at the range he displays. Ossie Davis is equally great as Kennedy, who believes he was sewn back together after the assassination, dyed black, and hidden away.

Also, they fight a mummy in a cowboy hat.

Much like director Don Coscarelli's more famous Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep is very much a cult film that was well-received critically (78% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes).

  2. I didnt tell you it was your turn yet mother fucker!
Doesnt matter, no one was discussing marathon man anyway.
    Another club, another failure.

  3. Well hell, I just figured we were posting these on a weekly basis. And here I was thinking I was participating in a timely fashion.

I like the club (I've watched every movie so far). I just think that there's only so much that can be said about classics and shit everyone's already seen. So I tried to pick something a bit off the beaten path this time around.

  4. This is still a classic in the vein of Big Trouble and Buckaroo. Good pick; haven't seen it in a few years either...

I can't express how awesome it is the first time you watch it, you fucks are in for a treat.

  6. I would be surprised if theres someone here who hasnt seen it opaque. Thought we were all fans of The Chin.
