Confirmed. 75% off on Steam for today!
First off: Japan (still a big market for them). Also, they still managed to have a subscriber base before the rebuild, and while the game may have gotten much much better by the end that still shows that nothing except their brand name alone will pull in money. Honestly, while the subscribtion fee model might be dying the cash shop model isn't (Tera went F2P a couple weeks ago and has already made more money than the their last few months of subscription fees combined), and it wouldn't be the biggest deal for them to introduce a costume cash shop which is a big money maker since they already have their own kind of monetary exchange program in the form of Crysta.
They removed the game's subscription fee after its terrible reception and left it that way until they could make some repairs, so it's clear that if nothing else they consider it to be a way of reestablishing their brand. Even if they end up losing money in the end on FFXIV it could still potentially be a media rescue for them and net them an overall future financial win.
You have to remember that Final Fantasy fans are the only rivals Nintendo fans have in terms of their willingness to buy absolutely anything with the logo.
I think the wonderful Chocobo games would have done well if that was the case. Final Fantasy is OVER and Square is OVER. All that's left of either Square or Enix is Dragon Quest.
but if a Final Fantasy XV is released, i will buy whatever system it's released on provided it isn't an MMO, or if it is, it's an MMO like DQX where it's secretly a 1-player game that just happens to be online.

E3 2013 trailer
says at the end that the NA and EU release dates are Feb. 11th and 14th respectively, 2014.
Bravely Default will probably be coming out around that same time, we can play that instead of this garbage.
