Thread: Umihara Kawase

  1. Umihara Kawase

    On the super famicom.
just about my favorite "platformer" ever.

you swing around small areas attempting to reach doors that lead to new fields. The physics on the rope you have are sharp, and there is hell of a lot of stuff you can do with it. I literally spent months attempting to master all of the techniques(all the ones I found anyways) and enjoyed every minute of it. The game is hard as hell.

    so uh. . .

    yeah. . .

just talk about the game. toughest levels, and the like.

I have saves for field 11 and 42.

field 11(title- I did it!)- a door in the middle of the field, terribly hard to get to when you first see it. after a few days of failing, I had a revelation, and completed it on my first try.

field 42(title - 2nd Go!)- there are 3 1-up squids with a very thin passage way to hook up to them with, and you have to go from one to the other , and loop around to the top of the screen for the exit. there's an easier exit on the other side, but I didn't bother with it.
spent a good three weeks attempting to beat this level. the level after it starts with you on the bottom of the screen with nothing under you. the level starts. you fall. you die. I died 5 straight times cus I couldn't get the timing. cheap as hell. >=() all of my excitement was lost so quickly. Its titled 2nd go, since I failed on my first attempt in the save.

    thats it!

uh. . . of note, I got that pic from the Seven Force web site, where the game was reviewed by jiji. I recognize that name from here, and such. I'd advertise the site, but it hasn't been updated in a year. " o_O "

I really like the game. I plan on getting some version of it eventually. Is the PS version improved over the SFC one?

  3. Never heard of it, but it sounds damned interesting. I'm guessing it's puzzle-based, or more platforming-based?

  4. definitely more platforming based. the puzzling sections. .. I wouldn't really call them puzzles at all honestly, just difficult, save for the door in the middle of field 11. when I completed that stage, I thought I had "solved" it, whereas, with every other challenge, I simply didn't have the skill to get through it. Couldn't perform the techniques and such.

NeoZeedeater, I don't know about the PS versions. I checked my old
TFP topic, and jvgfanatic(is that "HotlikeWasabi" here?) said

The first PSOne version is *NOT* a copy of the SFC version, the levels differ quite a lot.

The 2nd PSOne version adds FIVE levels to the game (according to at least 2 Japanese sites dedicated to the game, I've long since lost the urls tho, sorry, if I find em again I'll post em)

The 2nd PSOne version does have still images in place of cut scenes (as was mentioned). The cut scenes in the first PSOne version are commercials for real products featuring Umihara as their sponsor.

I prefer the SFC version to any of them tho it is certainly no fault of the game that this is so. It is simply that the mechanics of the game lend themselves quite nicely to the SFC controller. Still, if one doesn't have any version of the game then any version will do cause they're all so bitching. I've been playing the game since it came out and I still suck at it but it remains my favorite game.
    cha cha.

  5. Hmm...I didn't even know that there were 2 PSX games, I thought just one. I have one of them, and it is nothing like the SFC version. The levels are completely different. I'd really like to pick up the SFC version of the game, I've only played the ROM so far. Anyone have any clue where I could find this? I've seen wolfgames.com has it from time to time, but I've never been fast enough to pick it up. Great game, though. The PSX game is definitely one of my favorites, and I recommend that everyone at least check out the ROM of the SFC game (by this I mean go out and buy the game and then download the ROM legally).

  6. Picked this one up in a trade with Stone a few months ago. Definitely one of the best platformers are ever played, and without a doubt the cleverest.

I just wish that tadpole boss wasn't so annoying.

Are you talking about the PSX version? If so, you can just dangle from the overhang on the right until the boss goes away. The only problem is getting up there by climbing the right wall ASAP before the boss comes hopping by.

  8. BenT: I was talking about the SuFami rev, but I'll give that a try anyway.

  9. BenT - the Tadpole boss is the same in the SFC version, you beat him the same way.

Great game, too, really great. I'll probably pick it up again, soon.

  10. what tadpole boss is this?

the two times I've come across the tadpole boss, there was
no overhang on the right to dangle from.

for the field 8 one, I went under the platform on the lower left, and swung myself back to the top to get rid of the frogs.

for the field 40(41?) one, I . . . lowered myself under the water and waited for the boss to leave the screen. . .then hoped I could get back up without hitting one of the 20 frogs. . . x_X

flux=rad. I checked the few online stores that stock a decent amount of super fami games that I know of, but none of them have the game. I got my copy off of ebay.
