Yeah, I'd imagine they're throwing all of it out so that they can gather up the parts they like and build what they feel like out of it.

Wild speculative guesses: Domnhall Gleeson is Luke's son, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver are the Solo kids, Oscar Isaac is Luke's first apprentice who has turned to the Dark Side, and Max Von Sydow replaces Alec Guiness as Obi Wan's ghost. John Boyega... I dunno, Lando's grandson? I suppose he could be Luke's kid if they're willing to toss the single most popular EU character aside rather than work her into the new continuity. Hopefully Gleeson's red hair indicates that's not what they're doing. Oh, and Andy Serkis will be some kind of weird mocap alien, of course.
