Thread: Redbox Instant: New streaming service that focuses on new content

  1. Redbox Instant: New streaming service that focuses on new content

Well, it looks like the third pillar is finally being erected. Today, Verizon and Redbox owner Coinstar have announced that beta testing will start late this month for their upcoming streaming service, Redbox Instant. No TV shows, but supposedly the newest movie content.

The service will begin a public beta test later in December, and after one free month, Redbox Instant will cost $8 per month. At launch, the service will include movies from Epix, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Paramount Pictures, Relativity, Sony Pictures, and Warner Brothers (which is owned by CNNMoney parent company Time Warner).

For $1 more, or $9 per month, customers will receive credits for four DVD rentals at Redbox kiosks. Those rentals typically cost $1 each.
Coinstar's chief financial officer told CNNMoney in February that the venture would be aimed at new-release content. The comment appeared to be a dig at Netflix (NFLX), which features a large catalog of past-season TV shows and older movies for streaming, but has been criticized for a lack of newer content.

The Redbox Instant press release on Wednesday talked up that new-release focus, particularly Epix content.
If they really stick to the "New releases 90 days after they hit theaters" time frame, I can see this serving a purpose alongside both Netflix and Hulu. All of these services seem to have found their niche. Hulu has brand new TV shows, Netflix has a huge back catalog, and Redbox seems poised to have new release movies cornered. I say bring it on and put another nail in the coffin for the cable networks and their ridiculous and stupid pricing!

I don't even know if I care if it kills cable anymore. I used to say I wish I could just buy channels but after watching some cable again during thanksgiving, I'm aghast out how horrible it all is right now.

Everything is fucking reality shows. TLC is reality shows. Food network, reality shows. The history channel even has them now. How the fuck does a channel about the past have a reality show?

Cartoon network is about all I ca stomach these days. I'm sure it will go to garbage some day

  4. History channel is dogshit now. All these channels are. TLC, History, NatGeo, Discovery, etc. I remember a time when these channels were stodgy and dorky but you would learn stuff. Now, they are worse than everything.

  5. Cable it pretty useless now. As long as you have a decent connection you can watch just about everything via the internet. If they can stream the latest and greatest in movies, I'd probably be in.

  6. I get cable for free and I still can't be bothered to buy a tuner for it.

  8. I get by on Amazon streaming and Hulu.

This is true, as long as you don't enjoy local sports.

Unfortunately there is absolutely no way other than cable that I can watch Ohio State, the Reds, & the Browns. Every streaming sports service blocks out local programing.

The one downside. I hope as streaming services become larger and play a more important role, blackouts disappear. Luckily for me, I am usually at the local Preds games.
