#4: Tomb Raider (PC)

Finished it a couple of weeks ago. This reboot was apparently made with me in mind; it took elements from some of my favorite VGs / genres and did them justice while still staying true to what a Tomb Raider game should be. You had your horror bits a la Resident Evil without the annoying item management. There was some surprisingly good stealth action, which is my preferred way to dispense of foes. It, of course, borrowed heavily from the Uncharted series, which is a franchise that I totally dig. And, yet, at its core it was still all about those giant, wide open levels like in the original TR where you could scale to dizzying heights and then take in the expanse below. Or toss Lara over the edge.
Getting back to the obligatory Uncharted comparison, the new TR does an admirable job of emulating the cinematic look and feel that the Uncharted games do so well, but it doesn't quite reach the standard that Naughty Dog has set in that regard. Also, Nathan Drake and co. are a far more charismatic and likeable bunch than the cast in TR, BUT the new Lara is easily my favorite as an individual character. One area, however, in which I thought TR clearly out-shined Uncharted was its combat. The fighting / shooting is more fleshed-out and fluid, and that bow of Lara's is fucking killer.
Personally, I found the game to be the perfect length. If you're like me and love to scour every nook and cranny, stopping every once in a while to simply look around at the art, then you can easily spend 20+ hours acquiring all of the single-player achievements and finishing at 100% complete. I thought the story was pretty good, too. Imperfect, but decent. Oh, and this game is absolutely GORGEOUS. Not that that's news to anyone. I'm definitely going to play through it again on easy just to experience it at my leisure and without the pressure of having to complete everything.
Anyway, I enjoyed the hell out of this one and am looking forward to the next instalment!
edit: Forgot to mention the simple leveling and upgrading system, which I thought was a fun way to gradually increase Lara's prowess and firepower without being cumbersome and complicated.
