  1. I beat the Run part of NFS: The Run. With the latest patch, this is a pretty underrated game on PC since it doesn't have the performance issues. It's nothing but point to point courses with no GPS bullshit everywhere.

    Except being an actual playable game that isn't boring after like 30 mintues. Origins is pretty alright, nothing that great. Everyone was all over it didn't look like it was made by two guys in a house in at least one state being California or North Carolina. Adventure Island is better than Origins.

    Legends seems a lot better just from the demo. Also you can select a character who isn't Rayman or a giant piece of shit or a teenie piece of shit. +1000 points.

  4. 10. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate



    lol, just got the Moga Village credits and the game clock is saying something like 120 hours. A lot of that is multiplayer, at least.

    I have no idea how previous entries in this series were, but I'm obviously enjoying this. Assuming the earlier games were similar, this franchise is probably where the Souls games got their basics from, and the Souls games are probably the closest series I can compare this to. Like Souls, this game does a great job of taking satisfying combat mechanics (strict controls, lots of nicely-sized movelists, stamina meter management, long missions where strict death penalties make your party give a shit) and spreading them out over tons of battles. There's also a ton of preparation (all those items and armor skills!) and a bit of aimlessness. The game has a good number of base monsters, many of which have variants that have basic but pretty clever differences (often one or two new moves to go along with changes in damage/speed/elements) to keep things interesting. And as a loot game? Man, I'm pretty sure nothing comes close.

    Even with all these hours in, I'm looking forward to seeing the G-rank stuff in Tanzia. The sea breeze beckons.

  7. 8. Tomb Raider (360) 865/1000

    100% single player completion. Excellent game from start to finish. The world is gorgeous and a pleasure to platform around in. Really nice verticality in the levels and a steady progression of new abilities kept things interesting. The enemies are fodder but fun to take out (headshots are very satisfying, and the finishers are great). Game does a great job of selling the atmosphere and keeping things tense, and often I would just let myself die to see how it would happen. Some really nice deaths in this game. It was nice to include a fast travel option for going back and finding the missing collectibles, of which there were a decent amount. Strange they would choose to leave an area or two completely off the fast travel map though, seeing as how those areas still had challenges and things to complete for achievements. The story was interesting I guess, if a little meh. Lara's friends worked real hard at being completely unlikeable, except for the big frat boy dude who was not such a dick but very predictable "YOU GUYS! IF WE FIGHT AMONGST OURSELVES, WE LOSE!!! BE NICE AND STUFF, Y'ALL!!!" The optional tombs were short and sweet and to the point, which I appreciated. For some reason I imagined each one would be a long, arduous trek but most required one puzzle to solve and boom it's done, keep on movin. Good stuff. Multiplayer is ok, if not kinda boring. The tense and tight gunplay from the single player does not seem to carry over well to multi, where most matches seem to devolve into everyone just holding down the fire button and running in circles until it's over. So the fact that there's achievements for reachling level 60 in MP and then buying all MP items (prestige 3 times?!? FUUUUUCK YOU!!!!!) is a bummer, but I'm sure I'll go back for them eventually. It's cool that you can invite friends to ranked multi games to boost some of the online cheevos, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone on playing it lol. Overall excellent game, would recommend to anyone, will be going back again soon.

    (XBLA) 245/400

    Interesting game, I was really excited for it since I loved Shank and I really dig Klei's style. I don't think I enjoyed it as much as some people here, but overall it was pretty good. The stealth works pretty ok, and there's definitely many different ways to go at most sections. Was definitely a bit longer than I anticipated, I kept thinking I was at the end and then 5 more levels happened. Will be going back for the New Game + run where I'll clean up the things I missed, but I'm in no rush. Would have been nice to have some stun or non-lethal takedown options, seems silly that he could sneak up on dudes and eviscerate them but not choke them out or whatever. Overall competent and decent.

    10. Poker Night at the Inventory 2 (XBLA) 345/400

    This was a kind of impulse buy for me. Having never watched the Venture Bros until a week or so ago (thanks Netflix!), as soon as I saw Brock Samson in there I thought I should probably play it, if for nothing else than the banter and the unlocks. It's all single player tourneys, Hold em or Omaha style, and you play with Samson, Claptrap, Ash (Bruce Campbell), and Sam (Sam and Max). Supporting characters being GLaDOS as the dealer and Moxxi as the barmaid, and Steve (random psycho from BL who is the best character in this game). It's kind of barebones. The poker itself is pretty bad. The AI is terrible and can be completely bought out in most scenarios. Most will call you if you only bet 3k or lower, but they fold real quick on most higher bets. Get any of them below 10k and raise, and they'll probably go all in, even with nothing (mostly with nothing). The real draw is the unlockables and the conversations. For unlocks, there are 5 BL2 heads and 5 avatar awards, 1 of each for each property. I really like the Brock Samson head for the Gunzerker and the Portal Turret head for Zero. For convos, it's generally some funny or interesting thing that one character asks about another's universe, but after about 6 full tourneys you'll have heard ALL of it, and there is no way to skip the dialogue. Every single raise is met with the same one or two "You might wanna pace yourself" or "Interesting, no wait what's the opposite of that?" Every. Single. Raise. A few lines still make me chuckle, but it's dumb things like Claptrap saying "Ahhh F@$ THAT!" when losing on an All In or telling Steve to shut the fuck up. So swearing. The funny parts are really just the swearing (and GLaDOS, she's pretty entertaining). I have one more achievement to get for lifetime bankroll, and once it's been had I doubt that I would have any reason to turn the game on again, outside of showing it to someone. Also the game froze my Xbox like 3 times so far.

    This is pretty good. It's crazy good-looking for the hardware, the orbiting and occasional free movement are pretty unique, there are plenty of nice enemy and boss designs, it's appropriately paced, and the extra stages seem pretty cool. Definitely one of the better rail shooters I've played.

  10. Nah, it still looks nice, especially with a little texture smoothing.
