  4. Isn't 90hz or higher 3d at higher than 1080p going to be.... well, impossible for even current high end rigs to achieve in any "real" games?

    Possibly, but similar logic didn't stop you from buying a 1440p monitor, right? If it works like 3D Vision (and I have no idea if it does), the refresh rate gets cut in half. You buy a 120Hz monitor to experience 60Hz. If that's the case, 90Hz seems like the low end of acceptability.

  6. It doesn't work like 3D vision, so with DK2 right now you get a fully 75hz image.

    Super high-end visuals are going to be tough, no doubt about it. Two things that would help deal with this are wider-spread Timewarp integration (which, in my experience, practically allows the user to basically rotate their view at a more fluid framerate than the game is performing at) and variable refresh rate tech (which would severely lessen the impact of judder when that 90hz can't be reached). I don't know if we'll see the latter (it might conflict with the motion blur eliminating Low Persistence mode, which is more important), but the former will definitely be more widespread over time.

    And of course, there are always targets below the high-end. My UE4 game is pretty basic-looking (unfortunately) and I can maintain the 75hz 1080p stereo needed on my old 580. I don't think the engine has Timewarp integrated yet. Tekken Team's extremely Japanese VR demo, Summer Lesson, is running on PS4 UE4 and has really impressive visuals in the promo. And the Note 4 powered Gear VR can apparently do basic 3D games at 1440p 60hz.

    Right, but using my 1440p monitor doesn't require the extra processing for side-by-side 3D, which is asking a lot, especially if the oculus' screens get even higher than 1080p.

    Mine does (or rather alternating 3D), but it's also 1050p. I'm perfectly willing to buy one of those 8GB cards if that is what it takes to optimize the experience.

    I saw a video nVidia did for the SIGGRAPH 2014 Technical Papers Program dealing with a theoretical solution for some of the problems the screens in the oculus were having. Interesting stuff.
