Tecmo was doing this shit in 2001.
Obviously having a game's resolution match your display's resolution is a big deal for image clarity and an overall important thing, but I can't imagine anybody genuinely interested in a game (not port) suddenly skipping it solely due to a 1080p-to-900p resolution drop. It's even more bizarre in this case, since those most passionate about image quality will be playing on PC.
This C-64 game looks nothing like the screenshots on the box!
Well 1080p is much preferred by me but I can stomach less, obviously.
I'd rather have 720/60 than 1080/30 in almost every case. I just like when the internet performs the big sessions of mental gymnastics and backtracking.
Console folks for the longest time have had to settle for compromises so I don't see why it should be any different now. I think people got disillusioned that 1080p 30/60fps was going to be the standard right out of the gate for every game but that's really dependent on the developer and what they're trying to balance graphically so everything runs well on the console.
Maybe later on in the console lifecycles that'll become the magic standard but resolution seems to be one of those areas in which developers are more keen to be fluid about.
