Thread: War Pact: Pile of Shame 2013

  1. The 3DO D&D games ignited my love for dungeon crawlers. I couldnt stand the King's Field games until the ps2 though. I have the psone games (and shadow tower) but those games were just too slow and clunky.

  2. My pile of shame is ridiculous, but I've been making progress. Now that my computer is back alive, I'm going to get back to it. Quantum Conundrum and Assassin's Creed II will be next. Then maybe restarting Valkyria Chronicles (played it but never beat it)

  3. Got through Resident Evil 5, a game that was on my backlog for 3 years in one form or another.

Now I'm playing through RE6. Only on Leon's campaign, but I actually dig it.

Since I had nothing better to do on a Friday night (thanks, marriage!), I actually went through with this but went back three years instead of just two. From 2010 through 2012, I finished 83 games. 48 of them were western developed; 35 of them were Japanese. This was surprisingly even, until you look a layer deeper:

    • Of the Japanese developed games, 27 of them are ports of or sequels to arcade games (with a large dose of Cave). Two more are Castlevanias.
    • The stragglers were Super Metroid, Game Dev Story (really Korean), Star Fox 64 3D, RE: Revelations, Ghost Trick, and The Goonies.
    • The platforms for the Japanese games were 12 on iOS, 9 on PS3, 5 on 360, 2 PS2, 2 Wii VC, 2 MAME, 2 3DS, and 1 FC.

So I finish almost nothing new from Japan, which supports the original hypothesis. For completeness, here is the west:

    • One was an arcade port; one is a Castlevania.
    • Instead, they break down by genre like this: 14 Action/Adventure (10 TP and 4 FP), 7 Adventure, 6 RPG, 5 Sandbox (e.g. GTA), 4 Casual, 4 Platform, 4 Strategy, 2 Racing, 1 FPS, and 1 Laser Disc.
    • And by platform: 25 on PC, 8 on PS3, 7 on 360, 6 on iOS, 1 on Vita, and 1 on Wii

I'm going to try to keep this in mind when considering a purchase. It certainly correlates well with the pile of shame at the top.

do you buy books like this too?

I'd like to think that I apply the logic that I don't want to buy things I won't use to most things.
