I'm pleasantly surprised by all the positive reactions here. I guess I'll play the PC version a little further down the road, instead of completely ignoring as I planned on.
I'm like 50% through the story, and been doing a bunch of the side mission stuff. I like it for the most part, there are just a few things keeping it from being better than AC. The grapple points is a big one, as well as the change to upgrades. So instead of just getting to pick what ever upgrade you want, you now have to follow certain paths, and a bunch of them are locked behind doing certain side missions in the game. The last one is the changes in combat, that make it a bit more frustrating at times. They've made the enemies a lot more aggressive, and they've speed up their attack animations. They didn't speed up Batman's and it seems like there's more uncancel able actions in combat than before. So it becomes a bit frustrating if you get surrounded by a large group with armored folks and knife thugs. You really have to work on avoiding getting surrounded, and stick to trying to single out a few folks. It just loses a bit of that bad ass feeling you'd have taking down a bunch of thugs surrounding you like in AO. If it wasn't for those three things I think I'd put this above AC, but with those it's sitting right between AC and AA for me so far. Also any more Arkham games and they need the main villain to be anyone other than the FUCKING Joker again. I get it completes the trilogy for this in a way, but fuck. Batman has such a large rogues gallery and lots of them are interesting, we can have some one behind everything that isn't the god damn Joker. I know he's "dead" now but who thinks that's actually going to last.
I wouldn't want to pay $10 for a feature I don't want anyway?
Although I'm not really interested in Origins anyway. I loved the claustrophobic feeling in Asylum and when that was stripped out in favor of City's psuedo-open-world, I lost a lot of love for the series. Sounds like this is more City, just worse?
PC version has a ton of annoying bugs. I have to delete a file every time I start the game and reset graphic options or else it crashes when I try to load a saved game.
Glad I didn't buy it and I'm playing through using my nephews copy on Steam Family Share.
I feel like there are a good amount of indoor portions. Sewers, Blackgate, Mad Hatter, Steel Mill, etc.
Sounding better...I think what I didn't like about City was the concessions made between wanting a Metroid Batman, and an open world one. If in most open world games, I can fast travel or get around/through a thing numerous ways is a good thing, the alternative of "we locked this building behind needing a gadget" and grapple points seems counter intuitive. I loved Asylum though because the gadgets feel like they're always important, especially in terms of being a claustrophobic environment relying on resourcefulness.
Since I was home from work yesterday waiting for maintenance to show up (water from the apt above us was leaking into our bathroom from the ceiling) I got to put in a bunch of time into this. I'd say I'm a littler more than 3/4 of the way through the game. I've done all but 3 of the most wanted missions, almost all of the crime scenes and most of the story. I've enjoyed the game a lot, but I think there were just a few pacing and design choices that keep it from being better than AC. There's 2 gadgets you don't get till you're mostly done with the story that you need to unlock most of the fast travel points. Least if you're doing side missions while going through the main story. I suppose for folks who don't touch any of the Most Wanted, or Crime Scene stuff till they've finished the main story it's fine. Having done them a long side it, it feels like a waste unlocking them now. I don't need to do as much back and forth, and at this point I've figured out routes for grappling. That really don't take much longer, if at all, than the cutscenes that play when you pick fast travel. The boss fights for the most part are fantastic, though so far they haven't hit the high of the Mr Freeze fight, they have been overall great. The Bane stuff alone is better than any fights with Bane from AA. Just a few design changes and this could have easily been better than AC.
