Well at least they have one valid point. IP law enabling Marvel to get away with stealing an existing character's name is bullshit.
But whatever, this movie rocks. Not one of Marvel's best, but solidly in the second tier with Dr Strange and Ant-Man. I look forward to future stories with this character that aren't weighed down by having to cover her (somehow even more) convoluted (than in the comics) backstory. Young Nick Fury is both a delight in the contrast with the version of him we know, and a very impressive visual effect. Best movie cat since Jonesie. Making the Skrulls the good guys was a stroke of genius - there are times when an adaptation makes a change and it just feels disrespectful to the source material (black leather outfits in Xmen because "we can't have colorful costumes in a movie, no-one would take it seriously" for example), and then there are ones like this, where they play with informed audiences' expectations and it ends up more pleasing than a direct translation would be. Lots of fun continuity tie-ins with the other Marvel movies, for us dorks that care about that. The origin of Fury's Avenger Initiative - both the idea and the name - in particular is brilliant. Really impressive magic trick, making a room full of people tear up with a studio logo. Stan Lee's cameo was the coolest yet, but also broke my brain - instead of some random geezer only notable for looking like someone the audience recognizes, this time he's actually playing himself. Which means the creator of all these superheroes exists in the same world as his creations.![]()
