Thread: Orange is The New Black

  1. Season 2 was, overall, great. Vee's character is totally just an embodiment of chaos and little else, so I can't say I was thrilled at the convenient plot device of killing her off, but I WAS thrilled at Rosa having a moment of glory there. This show is all about character, and I love it for that.

    No, it's not the thought-provoker it could have been ("Do they really do that in prison?") but it doesn't have to be. It's primarily a comedy with amazing characters. The lives of women in prison feel more real to me. I can't say it's something I ever really wondered about before, but I'm glad this show makes me wonder.

  3. Why hasn't anyone mentioned Season 3? Because it was ridiculous? Because the best thing about it was a juvenile attempt at satirizing private prisons despite not really knowing why they are bad (uh... because they have bureaucracies!)? Because it spends two episodes telling its fans to go fuck themselves?

  4. When it became apparent that Netflix did not want me to watch this show anymore, I followed their advice.
    Seriously, it had launched two days before I was aware of it, and I did not find out because it was all over the Netflix page like every other show they launch. No, I found out when I was skimming the list of new shit on instantwatcher.com.
    Even then, I had to search it out. I've watched the previous two seasons, and in all of their dumb recommendations, NEW SEASON OF OitNB was nowhere to be found.
    A friend of mine watched it, said she kept watching it and waiting for something good to happen, and then it was the final episode in which something did happen, but only as a cliffhanger to get you to watch next year's season.

    So I have not watched it. My chick and I watched the two previous seasons together, something we never do. I told her go ahead and watch this one on her own as I've no interest. She's said she has started the first episode 3 times but keeps falling asleep.

    This may go down with Heroes as one of the shows that might have been good had it not been cancelled after one season.

  5. Yeah, all around it wasn't that great of season.
    You sir, are a hideous hermaphroditical character which has neither the force and firmness of a man, nor the gentleness and sensibility of a woman.

  6. It ended strong, but not too much happens. It's mostly background stories for a few characters and they finally ended the pregnancy plot (sort of).

  8. Plenty happens. It just happens either without vision or with the most superficial, populist, blue-state-strokin' social criticism. All of the back stories have some of victim-of-circumstances, golly-should-we-really-be-punishing-her ambiguity. Every character was an innocent little flower until some external force, almost always poverty or religion, forced her hand into doing something (kind of) illegal, almost always to help another downtrodden Oliver Twist. Piper's is the only story of a convict with nobody and nothing to blame but herself, but the show hasn't been interested in that in two years now.

    I'm exactly the kind of bleeding heart liberal this show is of and for, and I'm rolling my eyes at these sob stories. Some people are just greedy. Some people are just evil. You don't have to turn in your Democrat card if you acknowledge this.

    I mean, the evil capitalist free market man literally says "fuck the short term" and "it's time you start looking out for yourself." He had a whisky tasting during a business meeting. This is some Huffington Post fantasy camp shit right here.

  9. Oh, and it looks like there will be a bunch of new characters next season! Because that's what this show's problem is: not enough characters.

    I wonder when they are going to address the fact that Piper got like, what, 18 months?
