All of the Japanese versions of all of the Godzilla films are better.
My gf actually picked up that DVD and we watched it recently. I was suprised at how well it holds up and the general lack of cheese that became so commonplace in the later installments.
And once Godzilla himself was introduced in the film, he was around a lot more than in the 2014 version. But then again, he was the one attacking humanity in this instance so that's to be expected.
We watched the Japanese and American versions back-to-back (both were in the set), and the way they edited Raymond Burr in, although well-done, bordered on hilarious in parts (lots of body doubles shot from the rear, etc). Plus, even though he was just a newspaper reporter, everyone treated him like he was a round-eyed god, with even random politicians and military guys allowing him into top-secret meetings and asking him what to do.
And the stupid little things that were censored out, like the lead female being torn between two men (something American audiences could NEVER stomach!) were amusing as well.

If when they got to the real fights in the film they had stuck to Godzilla and not kept cutting to "idiot soldiers who in no way can get this nuclear bomb far enough away from San Francisco to have the city not be fucked" it would have been fine. But every time the fights were getting cool they had to cut back to DERP DE DERP

It's a dumb summer action movie. Who the hell cares about how well it holds up in repeat viewings?
I like when they gave themselves a half hour on the bomb timer, even though they were on the boat with the bomb, and didn't have another boat nearby to get the fuck away in a hurry or anything. Also setting the bomb next to a bridge full of schoolchildren.

$378 million box office gross worldwide, so far. I guess someone liked it.
