  1. That's a pretty terrible review, even if it turns out to be right. Guy says it's bad, even after praising Affleck's performance, and the only reason given is "lol plot holes". And he only gives one example, and it's not even a good one.

  2. You're not wrong. But there's a lot of other reviews coming out saying the same things, only written better. Affleck is being universally praised, however, and there are certainly some positive overall reviews coming in now.

    Personally, my lack of excitement for this movie has less to do with bias against DC on my part (I like Batman a lot, but have never really been into Superman) than it is my disdain for Zack Snyder as a director. That guy just fucking sucks.

    His big breakout was 300 — which to be fair was a pretty awesome interpretation of 300. However, 300 is also pretty simplistic in its characterizations. Heroes v. evil guys. There's something about his direction that makes everything seem devoid of weight. I mean emotionally and actually physically. Maybe he exaggerates too much? Like he doesn't understand the subtleties of drama v. melodrama. I haven't seen this movie so I'll reserve judgment.

    For all the shit naysayers fling at superhero movies — most of these characters have unique and subtle tones and themes associated with their powers. Flash, Batman, and Superman — if you don't nail the tone it's hard to connect. It's why something like Ant-man can be totally on-point but an entire Man of Steel movie is boring as fuck.

    No one likes superman because he is boring. He barely fit in the clean 70s and 80s. He fits less now.

  5. It's hard to made a compelling character out of a dude who's almost omnipotent. I still love the first two Reeve Supermans, though.

    But it's the same problem with the Wolverine movies...between his skeleton and healing factor he's basically unkillable, which gets boring. That's why I loved the bit in the most recent Wolvie movie (the Japan one) where they partially sabotaged his healing factor and made him vulnerable to gunfire and stuff (kinda like he was back in the old days of the comics before writers started having him survive nukes and other stupid shit). It was way more interesting, and I was bummed when he got his full powers back later in the film and he was just laughing off bullets and katanas through the stomach again.

    The whole thing about Superman that Snyder is fucking up IMO is that he's making him all grim and dark. Taking away Superman's Boy Scout nature compromises the essence of the character. Captain America is more how you do Superman; Cap is the ultimate good guy and his movies are quite popular, even in this day and age.

    Read Grant Morrison's All Star Superman.

    Superman can still be great but he has to be handled correctly.

  8. I'm telling you, this Superman is great. He's got all these powers, and I've read comic books. I've read them, a lot of them. I read. And Superman has a lot of potential, but he's gotta be handled right, and I can make him great again.
