You're right, we would praise a good actor over a shitty one. Why would we not?
While I think method acting can deliver fantastic results on screen but can also be dangerous to the actor, this seems like part of a chain of LaBeouf either doing publicity stunts or having a downward spiral. It seems to me like he's desperately trying to reinvent himself but isn't sure what he wants.
